Welcome
to Withybrook Acre Withybrook Acre is a triangle of land in Leicestershire left over when the great fields of the village were enclosed. Willow has been grown here and a stream runs along the boundary of the site. An old greenhouse stands as a reminder of when ladies from the village grew fruit and vegetables to sell in the local shop. After years of neglect, Withybrook Acre is coming back to life. The site is being cleared and the woodland area is being managed. Working with the Environment Agency we have cleared the stream on the lower boundary. New fruit trees have been planted to complement the old apple trees which produce a fine crop every year. Raised beds have been created on the footings of the old greenhouses. We are managing the boundary hedges by traditional laying techniques guided by a retired farmer. We plan to coppice the willow to make fencing. Horses live next door. We give them windfall apples, and they return the compliment with plenty of manure! We have the space to experiment. We can try different varieties on different soil preparations. We will record our efforts and the results (good or bad!) |
